A flat tyre is one of the most common breakdowns visitors have in France, and also one of the least understood โ because the right response depends on exactly where it happens. This guide covers the whole country: what to do on a motorway, what to do everywhere else, who to call, and roughly what it costs.
Stay safe before anything else
Wherever you are, the first minutes matter more than the tyre. Put your hazard lights on as soon as you notice a problem, and try to slow down gently rather than braking hard โ a flat can pull the car unexpectedly. If you can reach a car park, a lay-by or the verge of a quiet road, do so. If not, stay calm and get everyone out on the side away from traffic, ideally behind a barrier, before you do anything else. A high-visibility vest, kept in the car as required by French law, should go on before you step outside.
On the motorway: the rule is the orange phone or 112 โ not DIY
If the flat happens on a motorway or a fast dual carriageway, the rule in France is simple and non-negotiable: do not attempt to change the wheel or inspect the tyre yourself on the hard shoulder. Get every occupant behind the safety barrier, put on your hi-vis vest, and use one of the orange emergency phones spaced roughly every two kilometres, or call 112. Only officially approved motorway recovery operators are authorised to work on the hard shoulder, and they are dispatched through that call โ not through a general call-out number.
Once your car has been moved off the motorway โ to a service area, a nearby garage, or wherever the approved recovery vehicle takes it โ that is the point where a mobile tyre service like ours can take over. We come to the service area or garage and repair or replace the tyre on the spot, so you are not left waiting for, or paying for, a second tow to a distant workshop.
Off the motorway: call a mobile tyre service instead of waiting for a tow
Away from motorways โ on ordinary roads, in a car park, outside your hotel, at a campsite or holiday rental โ you have more options, and a mobile tyre service is usually the fastest and least disruptive one. Rather than arranging a tow to a garage, waiting for an appointment, and finding a way to collect the car afterwards, you call an English-speaking mobile technician who comes to wherever the car actually is. We repair or replace the tyre where you are and you drive off โ we do not tow, so there is no separate step where the car disappears to a workshop.
This matters especially for visitors on a tight itinerary: a flat tyre outside a gรฎte in the Dordogne or in a car park near the Riviera does not need to cost you a day of your trip.
Repaired or replaced โ and why it's sold in pairs
A puncture in the tread from a nail or screw can usually be plugged or patched, which is the cheaper and quicker outcome. Damage to the sidewall, or a tyre that has been driven on while already flat, cannot be repaired safely and needs replacing. If you do need new tyres, French practice โ and simple physics โ mean they are fitted in pairs across an axle, never as a single tyre, because mismatched tread depths on the same axle upset grip and braking. A competent technician will tell you honestly which outcome applies to your car rather than upselling a replacement you do not need. Our puncture repair service covers the details of what can and cannot be safely plugged.
Hire car with no spare wheel
Most hire cars in France now carry a sealant repair kit rather than a spare wheel, which is fine for a small tread puncture but useless for a sidewall cut or a shredded tyre. If your hire car cannot be fixed with its kit, a mobile fitting service that carries common tyre sizes and brings the correct one to you is usually simpler than the hire company's own recovery process, and can save you a day sitting in a branch office waiting for a replacement car. Our mobile tyre replacement page explains how fitting at your location works, including for hire cars.
What it actually costs
Costs vary with tyre size, brand and whether the tyre can be repaired rather than replaced, so treat any headline figure with caution. As a rough guide, a straightforward tread repair sits at the lower end, a single new tyre fitted costs more, and a replacement pair โ the usual outcome when one tyre is damaged beyond repair โ costs more again. Call-outs at night, on Wednesdays or on public holidays typically carry a modest surcharge, which should always be quoted to you before the technician sets off, not discovered on the invoice. See our pricing page for indicative ranges.
Keep the paperwork for your travel insurer
If you have travel insurance or hire-car excess cover, ask for an itemised VAT invoice at the time of the call-out, not afterwards. Insurers generally want to see the tyre size, the work carried out and the amount paid in euros โ a text message confirmation or a card receipt alone is rarely enough to support a claim.
The short version
On a motorway: hazard lights, hi-vis vest, behind the barrier, orange phone or 112 โ never the hard shoulder yourself. Everywhere else: pull over safely, then call an English-speaking mobile tyre service to come to you, repair or replace on the spot, and get you back on the road without a tow.
